Community Pencil Box

Children need constant encouragement to do well in school. New school supplies for a child are a rite of passage each year – but purchasing those supplies can be very expensive for a family with limited income, especially if they have several children.

Long Island Community Pencil Box strives to ensure children don’t go without school supplies during the school by empowering individuals and communities to act. Community Pencil Box mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide school supplies during the school year for elementary school children in Brookhaven Community whose parents cannot afford to buy them school supplies.

Our History

Long Island Community Pencil Box was piloted in 2012 in Mastic Beach, Mastic, NY, when a concerned community individual brought the issue of school supplies to a St. Andrews Church following Hurricane Sandy. The first church started with over 50 children, and the program continued to grow organically from there.

The Pencil Box program is a bit different from others. Instead of lining the families up and handing them pre-packed backpack with supplies, the area was set-up as a store.  Families come in and the students selected their own supplies. They had an opportunity to “shop” for their supplies just like other kids at their schools
